Professional tooth cleaning at the practice

Prevention is better than cure

Professional tooth cleaning (PTC) is carried out in our practice by specially qualified staff and is an essential part of our prophylaxis concept. In principle the individual steps are similar for all target groups - from children to seniors.

Our staff select materials, methods and devices to suit the age group. Firmly adhering deposits are usually loosened with ultrasound or carefully by hand using fine instruments.

Thorough cleaning of the teeth helps to prevent caries, gum inflammation and periodontitis.

Polishing of the tooth surfaces after cleaning

Powder-water jet device

With the powder-water jet device we gently remove discolouration and pigment deposits from the tooth surfaces. Fine spheres of a cleaning powder are added to the water-air mixture, so that even areas between the teeth that are hard to reach can be cleaned.

Thorough cleaning is followed by polishing: the smooth surfaces roughened by the cleaning steps are smoothed again in order to prevent bacteria and deposits from settling once more. Finally we fluoridate the tooth surfaces. Fluorides promote the re-deposition of minerals in the enamel and make it less sensitive to acids.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens during a professional tooth cleaning?
First hard and soft deposits are removed – with ultrasound, fine hand instruments and a powder-water jet device. The teeth are then polished and fluoridated.
Does a tooth cleaning hurt?
As a rule not. Sensitive spots do occur, for example with exposed tooth necks – simply let our staff know and the technique will be adapted accordingly.
Are discolourations from coffee and tea also removed?
Yes. Pigment deposits can be removed gently from the tooth surfaces and from the spaces between the teeth with the powder-water jet device.
Why are the teeth fluoridated at the end?
Fluoride promotes the re-deposition of minerals in the enamel and makes it less sensitive to acids. The preceding polish smooths the surface so that bacteria adhere less easily.
Is a professional tooth cleaning also suitable for children?
Yes. The procedure is basically the same, but materials and instruments are selected to suit the child's age.
